On this last day of the spring of poets, dedicated to grace, how can we not end with the hymn "Amazing grace", composed in the 18th century by John Newton and covered by the greatest American artists, including Aretha Franklin, Joan Baez, Ray Charles or Elvis Presley? This song is an integral part of the history of the United States, and its most poignant performance is undoubtedly that, a cappella, by Barak Obama during the ceremony in tribute to the victims of the Charleston massacre in June 2015.
Amazing Grace
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now am found
Was blind, but now I see
T'was Grace that taught my heart to fear
And Grace, my fears relieved
How precious did that Grace appear
The hour I first believed
Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come
'Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far
And Grace will lead me home
When we've been here ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we've first begun
Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now am found
Was blind, but now I see.
